Wynberg’s long and proud history of excellence in schoolboy cricket has resulted in a reputation as a world renowned team. With over a century of cricketing excellence, cricket forms a foundational part of Wynberg’s history, with numerous Wynberg boys going on to represent their country professionally at both a domestic and international level; ten Wynberg boys have played international cricket since the schools inception, including former England captain, Allan Lamb, and arguably the world’s greatest ever all-rounder, Jacques Kallis.
Coaches & Teams
The Director of Cricket at Wynberg is Mr Esmund van Wyk, and Teacher in Charge, Mr Taahir Samaai. Wynberg participates in four major annual cricket tours, competing against the best schoolboy cricket teams in the country. These are the Peninsula Cricket Festival, which takes place in January, in which our 1st XI and U15A compete, with our 1st XI travelling to attend the Cape Schools’ Week in September. Our U15A team competes in the annual Grey High School U15 Cricket festival, hosted annually in Port Elizabeth against the noted sporting school. Our U14 teaam participates additionally in the Hilton College Cricket Festival, hosted in the KZN Midlands in September, arguably the most prestigious U14 cricket festival in the country. Finally, our emerging XI team, the ‘Stayers XI’ travels to the Southern Cape in September to play in the Point 1st XI Schools Festival.
In addition to these annual tournaments, in recent years our U19A T20 side has been part of the North South Tournament, hosted in Gauteng, and our U15 Colts Squad has enjoyed mid-winter festival cricket in White River during the July holidays.
