Monday 6 March 23: The report on WBHS 1st X1 vs Bishops, as published in the Cape Argus – re-published, with permission of and credit to, Mogamat Goosain Abrahams.
In a day-night, 45 overs game hosted by Bishops Wynberg pulled off an Houdini act with a 6-run win. Wynberg batted first with Kyle William (60) without his regular opening partner Paul James who batted lower down because of exam commitments. It was only Williams who kept the innings on an even keel as the Bishops left arm quick Tiaan Louw (5/42) made huge inroads taking the first three wickets to fall including two in one over. The timely arrival of James to the crease steadied the innings. His half-century (52) included 3 sixes and was primarily responsible for Wynberg recovering to reach 154 in 39 overs. Leg spinner Storm Matthews (3/42) bowled tidily for Bishops.
At their turn to bat Bishops lost two early wickets both to Ebrahim Fakir the Wynberg opening bowler. But the consistent opener Adenaan Lagadien (48) and skipper Cole Crawford (29) took the score to 94/2 and Bishops were seemingly cruising to victory.
However calamity struck for the hosts when Lagadien was run out, and when Divan Linde the Wynberg leg spinner took two scalps on successive overs including the wicket of hard-hitting Abdullah Adams for a duck the writing was on the wall.
Although the Bishops tail rallied valiantly, the innings ended on 148 so tantalizingly close to victory.
