Friday 17 August 2018: A long weekend can either be perceived as a welcome respite from the gruelling competition of the season or as the cause of a loss of momentum. It is probably all psychological, but no doubt most if not all of our teams will have kept their eye firmly on the ball in terms of moving a step closer to a Triple crown, Grand Slam or Headmaster’s Grand Slam when friendship, rivalry and sportsmanship resume against Bishops this weekend.

For those a tad confused by this terminology, let me clarify: Beating the Southern Suburbs boys schools in Term 2 or 3 earns you a Triple Crown. Doing it in Term 2 and 3 earns you a Grand Slam. If you add into the mix a win over Grey High, then you can claim the Headmaster’s Grand Slam - the Holy Grail of Wynberg sport. With this in mind, I am sure that all parents will be reminding their sons of what is at stake as we enter the final stretch of the season with two All In weekends.

Our 1st team water polo boys will be braving some icy conditions this weekend with warm up matches at Reddam Constantia:

vs Silvertree 4ths at 13:00
vs RWC 2nds at 15:00
vs UCT 3rds at 16:00

Last weekend saw our cross country runners attempting a top 8 position at the WP trials at Fairmont. Despite none of our runners being able to achieve this goal, missing out on WP selection, well done to the following on their efforts:

Dylan Rudolph was alone in an incredibly competitive race, ultimately falling behind and ending the race in 12th position.

The U19 race had Caleb Gibson finishing 15th, running his 8km in a time of 30:48.

Brothers, Luke and Seth Meyer finished in 29th and 40th places in the U17 section respectively.

Caleb Vogt was the only U16 runner from WBHS, finishing in 29th position.

Our soccer players participated in a mini festival at Wynberg on Women’s Day last week. The results were:

U/19 Vs Cape District Team draw 1-1
U/19 Vs Robinvale lose 1-2
U/19 vs Portlands lose 1-3

U/17 vs Cape District Team lose 0-4

U/15 Vs Cape District Team draw 1-1
U/15 Vs Hamiltons Academy win 5-0

Wynberg Old Boy Matthew BowersAs is customary before the SACS fixture, our boys will be taking on the Old Boys in matches next week. These encounters are an important part of our sporting calendar and serve to entrench our claim to being “Brothers in an endless chain”.

Monday 20 August:

Squash - 18h30, Bill Bowden Courts

Tuesday 21 August:

Hockey - 18h00, Astro 1, Soccer - 16h00, Jacques Kallis Oval, and Cross Country - 16h50, Bill Bowden

Many of our old boys go on to higher honours and it is a privilege and a challenge for our boys to compete against them. We are proud to acknowledge the success of Matthew Bowers (Matric 2015 ) who has been selected for the SA Men’s Swimming team to participate in the upcoming ‘Africa Championship’ in Algeria from 10-16 September 2018. David Bedingham (2012) has been offered a Cobras franchise cricket contract for 2018/19, and Dylan Sage (2010) has been offered a Bulls rugby contract. And in hockey, Rhett Halkett and Jonty Robertson (Matric 2004) have been chosen for the S.A. World Cup Hockey Squad.

Current matric, Thando Ntini, has just returned from an SA U19 tour of England and will looking forward to taking up a semi-pro contract at the Cobras next year. So all in all, Wynberg sportsmen continue to put the school on the map.
