Wynberg Sports Roundup, Thursday 11 April 2019

WBHS Sports Roundup 11 April 2019

Thursday 11 April 2019: Rugby and hockey had an inauspicious weekend against Boland Landbou and Fairmont respectively. There is no value in sugar-coating the results. Wynberg expects better – this weekend is a big one against Stellenberg – something of an emerging force amongst co-ed schools who fancy themselves against the traditional boys' schools. The 1st XI will be looking to redeem themselves on the Wynberg astro at 18h00 on Friday while the 1st XV lock horns on the Hawthornden at 12h30 on Saturday. Cross Country started off this week's sporting competitions in Fish Hoek on Wednesday afternoon. Our team (Luke Meyer, Seth Meyer, Luke Matthewson) finished fifth. The first soccer team beat a juggernaut Mondale side 3-0, while squash have their first league fixtures at the end of this week.

Parking at the Wynberg astro
Please assist us in alleviating the traffic congestion in Cavan Road by doing the following:

1. Do not enter Cavan Close or the astro carpark under any circumstances.
2. Before turning left or right into Cavan Road via Alexander Road, rather consider using the parking available at the Jacques Kallis Oval. These gates will be open until 20h00 and only a 200m walk from the astro complex.
3. We would like to reserve Cavan Road for our visiting parents and players. However, I will not enforce this at the risk of inconveniencing Wynberg parents. Nevertheless, it would be helpful if Wynberg parents parked at the Girls’ High and the Boys’ Junior Schools where security will be on duty. Please note that the Girls’ School parking will be quite full until 17h00 this Friday vs Stellenberg, but will empty out quickly after that.

Please remember that alcohol may not be brought into the astro complex. Please also refrain from climbing over the astro fencing or venturing onto the astro at all times.

Uniform requirements at sport
It is compulsory for boys to arrive at their sports fixture in full winter OR summer uniform. We expect that all hockey players support their 1st XI and all rugby players support their 1st XV – not only for All in Weekends. Support must always be in school uniform.

Students at the Wynberg Astro Complex
Boys are not allowed at the astro during weekday afternoons unless they are practicing. Coaches or staff who see boys loitering at the astro have been instructed to report the students to their House Heads and the Vice-Principal of Sport.

WBHS Rugby Supporters' ClubWynberg Rugby Supporters' Club Re-Launched
The WRSC was re-launched at Newlands Rugby Day in March with considerable support. Sign-up options and benefits to members are available on our website. We look forward to welcoming Old Boys, Staff, and our Wynberg Families to be part of this reinvigorated initiative.

Wynberg Grey Weekend
Since 1996 our Wynberg Boys’ Schools have shared a weekend exchange of cultural and sporting activities with our friends and rivals in the Eastern Cape, The Grey. Alternating hosting the event annually, 2019 sees Wynberg Boys’ Junior and High getting ready to welcome Grey Junior and High on Thursday 25 April.

With 41 fixtures in place for WBHS alone: Squash, Hockey, Debating, Chess, Cycling, Golf, Surfing, and Rugby, a quick calculation of players, coaches, managers, and staff gives an indication of the sheer scale of this traveling show - it’s an event of massive planning that relies on goodwill, volunteers, and passion for our Wynberg commitment to build on our good traditions of the past. And this Wynberg Grey Weekend, born in the ‘new South Africa’ is a tradition we hold dear, as do our old boys, and our students who’ve competed against one another, and made friends for life.

For the vast majority of students, this weekend is the only chance they will have to tour in any of their 5 years at either Grey or Wynberg - it’s what makes this exchange unique, all age groups and teams meet in rivalry and competition.

It’s in this spirit of exchange that we appeal to our Wynberg Families to open their homes and hearts to our friends from Port Elizabeth - hosting is both ‘paying forward’ and returning the generosity of the famously friendly families from Grey.
