Wynberg Sports Roundup & the Rondebosch Derby Weekend

WBHS Rondebosch Derby

WBHS Rugby 19C vs Dollar AcademyFriday 3 August 2018: After fixtures against Pinelands and Bellville last week, Wynberg sport enters the rarified atmosphere of a home sporting derby as we go #Allin4Wynberg against Rondebosch this weekend.

Please ensure that your son attends either the 1st XI hockey on our Astro at 19h15 on Friday night, or the 1st XV rugby match at home on Saturday at 12h30. I get extremely nervous when I see our boys standing up on the top rung of the spectator seating at the Astro. It is 5 meter drop to the ground and the stands have no backing above knee height. The prefects and hockey staff have been instructed to ensure our boys stay seated at all times to avert an accident, please reinforce this with your sons.

WBHS Hockey 1stXI vs Sir William Borlase Grammar School (UK)A very big thank you to all parents that have thrown open their homes to boys from touring teams over the last couple of weeks. July is usually a bumper month for incoming tours and this year has been no different. Wynberg entertained 2 hockey tours from the UK and 4 for rugby. As many as 200 boys had to be accommodated over the period. Without the generous support of Wynberg families, touring teams would become a thing of the past. This would be very sad as Wynberg has a proud tradition of hosting teams from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, and South Korea. A glance at the plaques displayed in the Bill Bowden and the A Corridor tell a tale of long-standing international sporting relationships. Hopefully many friendships have been made to be rekindled on gap years or return trips in the future.

Cross Country

Our athletes competed in Milnerton in sunny conditions this week With the top 20 positions of the event qualifying for the WP Trials to be run on 18 August. Wynberg's athletes delivered sgood results - well done to them all:

U19: Caleb Gibson 2nd; U17: Caleb Vogt 9th, Luke Meyer 12th, Seth Meyer 19th; and in the U15 group, Cole Abrahams & Dylan Rudolph finished within the cut.

Sporting Achievers

WBHS Daniel JudgeCongratulations to Justin Sangster for his selection to participate in the FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations in Zambia from the 17th - 19th August 2018.

Daniel Judge, representing South Africa in Sweden, claimed his third consecutive KSI World Karate title - a South African Dojo record. An outstanding achievement, made even more so in that while Daniel qualifies in the Lightweight category, he elected to compete as a Heavyweight. Congratulations!

School sponsor, Mekor Ford, will have six vehicles available for test drives on Saturday at the rugby. Every Wynberg parent taking a test drive will ensure that the school gets R100 from Ford. Click here for the full story.
