Wednesday 4 July 2018: Ten months of planning, training, and commitment saw the dream of the Isimemo saseKapa (Cape Invitation) soccer squad sprout wings as the contingent flew out of Cape Town for Italy to compete in the San Marino Cup.
The brainchild of Wynberg Soccer MIC, Roland Rudd, ably assisted by passionate local soccer enthusiasts, the trip in Mr Rudd’s words: “has been a dream of mine - to take local SA soccer talent and showcase our abilities in competition and expose our youth to the best of international skills. I have been clear about my expectations for the players - this is not a holiday, it is a soccer experience and a chance for them to further their talents on European playing fields against top-level opposition.”
The Isimemo saseKapa (Cape Invitation) teams will play Milano FC, Ausonia FC in warm up games and then train at Inter Milan. From there they take part in the San Marino Cup against teams from Germany, Italy, USA, Bangladesh, and Spain amongst others.
The team includes Wynberg’s Jarred Johnson, Matthew Petersen, Phiwe Mentoor, Phindile Ralarala, Lyle Hendriks, Joel Abrahams, Keanu Gelderblom, Sibulele Mlunguza, and Luke Hubbard. The touring squad of 32 players, making up a Red and a Blue team, is led by Wynberg Soccer's Roland Rudd and pro-coach Johno Rossouw, with Paul Roos Gymnasium's head of soccer, Cobus de Beer, and Robinvale's head coach, Lewis Klaasen.
Mr Rudd continues: “Thank you to Wynberg Boys' High School and the management and support staff for the use of the school's facilities, and the enthusiastic assistance given to ensure the invitation team could train and play practice matches.”
A #WynbergMedia sports report, with thanks to Mr Roland Rudd.
[Click the image on the left to view the tour photo collection on Flickr. Soccer at Wynberg Boys' High School has seen its biggest growth in popularity and participation since the early 1900s. It is a credit to the efforts of MIC Roland Rudd, with the support of Wynberg's Sports Department, that the beautiful game now plays proudly alongside rugby and hockey in derby sport encounters against an increasing number of our traditional rival schools, all the while developing strong relationships in friendship and rivalry against other soccer clubs and schools in the Cape, and across South Africa. We wish all on the Isimemo saseKapa tour the best of successes, and an incredible learning experience. - Ed]
