Friday 26 January 2018, Wynberg Boys' High School: It was with great sadness that the Wynberg Community learnt of the sudden and untimely death of the school's head groundsman, Adrian "Arrie" Matthews, on the evening of Wednesday 24 January 2018.
Arrie oversaw the team that cared for Wynberg's facilities for over a decade with a great degree of pride and – during this time – endeared himself to a great many colleagues, parents and boys whilst overseeing the transformation of the school's fields and grounds into the world-class facilities that Wynberg boys enjoy today. Nothing ever appeared too much trouble for Arrie and late-in-the-day telephone calls and frantic pleas from sports' coaches asking for cricket middles, or for fields to be marked, were invariably answered in the affirmative care of Arrie's standard calm and cheerful manner.
The site of Arrie's car parked in the Aletta Walk car park – often at times when the vast majority of us were yet to leave our beds – was a particularly reassuring one as it symbolised that this hard-working, unassuming and wonderfully kind gentleman was – yet again – ensuring that Wynberg sportsmen got to ply their trades on some of the finest school sports' fields in South Africa.
Arrie was – simply put – one of life's good guys. He will be missed tremendously. His legacy at Wynberg, however, lives on care of the manicured surfaces synonymous with Hawthornden, the Jacques Kallis Oval, Oude Wijnberg and the Silverhurst fields.
Our sincerest condolences to his wife, Sarah, daughter and grandchildren. The Wynberg Family hold you in our thoughts and prayers.
