The Spirit of Wynberg Grey Weekend: Please join us at the Bill Bowden Pavilion

Follow the Wynberg Grey Weekend 2019 on Facebook

Friday 26 April 2019, Bill Bowden Pavilion, Home of Wynberg Old Boys: for nearly a quarter of a century students and families of both The Grey and Wynberg have enjoyed a unique reciprocity of hospitality and friendship as our two High & Junior Schools travel cross-Cape to enjoy the traditional cultural and sporting exchange known as Wynberg Grey Weekend.

With parent and supporters’ hospitality being laid on adjacent our Wynberg Astros during the course of the days’ play and into the evening, back on the High School campus the Wynberg Old Boys’ Union, and the WBHS Rugby Supporters’ Club take great pleasure in inviting all parents of our four schools, old boys of Grey & Wynberg, and our friends and neighbours to the Bill Bowden Pavilion for an easy evening of schools’ pride, camaraderie, and friendship.

With Wynberg families meeting their ‘weekend wards’ from the Eastern Cape in the early evening, and hockey families winding down after a full day’s competition, there’s the chance to grab some light refreshments and boerewors rolls on sale by our Rugby Supporters’ Club, meet up with old friends visiting from Port Elizabeth, and giving the youngsters some free time on the fields before heading home in advance of the big sporting Saturday.

For parents, old boys, and non-school going over 18s, the Wynberg Old Boys’ licensed premises will be open into the evening with light music and big screen TV sport on tap - a chance for veterans of Wynberg Grey Weekend to renew friendships, and exaggerate their on-field tales of sporting derring-do since this unique relationship between our two great schools began, at Grey, in 1996.

Wynberg's Music Stalwart, Brian Botha - the Farewell Function

View photos of Mr Brian Botha's farewell on Flickr

Friday 19 October 2018: Guests gathered in the Clegg Hall to hear a wide range of stories, memories and salutes to Brian Botha at the celebration of his extensive career at Wynberg. Tributes (and exposés) from Gareth Randall, Deneen Botha, Steven Doidge, Daphne Jubber, Keenan Oliphant, Julian Taylor, and Larry Moser prompted many a laugh and tear.

As a tribute to Mr Botha’s massive influence on the school’s cultural development, the musical performances were true to Wynberg’s trademark of the highest quality – “Old Man River” sung by Yiming Kong and Malcolm Scarrott, “For Good” arranged by Amy Campbell and sung by the inimitable vocal ensemble, “Here’s to the Heroes” sung by a combined choir of Old Boys and current learners and conducted by Amy Campbell, music from the String Ensemble led by Mr Conrad van Breda, the ever-present Concert Band’s resounding performances conducted by Mr Peter Catzavelos, and a breath-taking rendition of Claude Debussy’s “Poisson d’Or” from Kevin Kim – a past pupil of Mr Botha and currently studying B. Mus Honours in Piano Performance at SACM UCT. Afterwards guests enjoyed tea and sumptuous sweet treats reflecting Mr Botha’s enjoyment of the fine things in life. It was an all-round display of Wynberg’s best for a much loved stalwart!

Wynberg Spotlight 2018: a Wynberg Campus of Schools Talent Showcase

Friday 9 March 2018: The Wynberg Campus of Schools is delighted to launch Wynberg Spotlight, 4 separate talent competitions rolling out cross-campus in preliminary rounds to come together in a gala final performance on 18 April in the Arnold Lorie Hall at Wynberg Boys' Junior School.

Beyond just music, dance, and singing, #WynbergSpotlight seeks to showcase the special skills and talents of our students in all forms of performance art. A mass participation event, #WynbergSpotlight focuses on fun and entertainment, providing a platform to help our performers grow and hone their skills in presentation and stage confidence while standing a chance to win great sponsor prizes along the way.

The preliminary rounds will be hosted internally by each of our four schools, with each school sending its top performers through to the finals to be adjudicated by a panel of celebrity judges ... under the spotlights, of course!

Follow each of the schools’ preliminary rounds on Facebook.com/WynbergCampusOfSchools and Facebook.com/Wynberg.Create. It’s going to be huge, with photos, videos, stories, and personality profiles.
