CWESI is about New Beginnings, where adults with a desire to turn their lives around through education get given another chance.

Founded by the late Joan Williamson in her garage in the mid 80’s after she saw the need for adult education. She discovered that many of the domestic workers in the Constantia area could neither read nor write, nor possessed basic numeracy, and started offering lessons. The school was supported by the Catholic Church in Constantia and grew rapidly.

Jan de Waal, Wynberg Boys’ High’s then head of department in charge of culture and headmaster since 2016, heard about the iniative and felt that since the classrooms stood empty at night, it made sense to use them for the benefit of the community. On 12 June 1995 Wynberg offered the use of the school’s classrooms, the project became known as the Constantia Wynberg Education Sharing Initiative, and CWESI opened its doors.

CWESI has continued to flourish and grown in numbers, particularly after offering the opportunity for students to write Grade 12.

Attending CWESI is free. It operates four nights a week between 6pm and 9pm and is partly funded by the Department of Higher Education (DHET), and proudly supported by Wynberg Boys' High School and The Supera Moras Trust. There are a large number of students wanting to enrol with CWESI, but due to a lack of sufficient funding lecturers are limited and the night school struggles to accommodate all applicants.
