Educators: Bernard Loots Mika Zeeman Wynberg’s Accounting department has experienced tremendous growth over the past couple of years. In 2016 there were a total of 20 Grade 12 learners and we expect to have about 70 Grade 12 learners in 2020, which would make Wynberg’s accounting department one of the biggest in South Africa. Below is a brief overview of the Department’s growth and expected growth in terms of learner numbers: Year 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 Learners 20 29 44 45 70 Growth (%) - 45% 52% 2% 56% In terms of results, last year’s Matric group passed with a grade average of 78%! 8 Of the learners (40% of the class) achieved an A-aggregate for the year. This was the best matric accounting results in the long history of Wynberg Boys and is something we are very proud of. Currently the Accounting Department is embarking on a project to digitize the learning process and do away with textbooks and workbooks. Instead, we are exposing the learners to doing accounting electronically on excel-based (self-assessing) activities. Through doing this we believe that we are exposing our learners to extra skills, which they would use later in life, if they do follow a career path in finance. This unique way of learning would also set our boys apart from all other schools and would leave our boys at an advantage over their peers the day they leave school. The fact that the learners are engaging technology in the classroom could be a contributing factor to the increase in the number of learners taking up the subject. We intend to ensure that the learners are continuously stimulated and get the best possible exposure to what they might experience after school.
