SECOND REMINDER

2012 Budget Meeting for Parents will be held in the Fishbowl on Tuesday 1st November at 18h00.

SPORT THIS PAST WEEK

Unfortunately many of our cricket matches were rained out last weekend and only a few teams got to play. Our under 15s managed to bowl out Stellenberg for only 10 runs with Robin Kriel taking 6 wickets for only one run. David Bedingham also starred in the 1st XI game scoring 107 not out in their victory over Stellenberg.

The 14As, 14Bs, 15As and 2nds all played 20/20 games against Bishops on Tuesday evening while the 1st XI played a 45 over game. All five of these teams won which made it a good night for Wynberg cricket. Sabir Mallie played his 100th match for the 1st XI and managed to top score with 69. This is an outstanding milestone to achieve.

Basketball played Westerford on Wednesday with our first team winning 29-26 and our 14as winning 25-19. Unfortunately our 16as went down 23-30.

Migyle Stevens who has just turned 16, ran the Gun Run Half Marathon and came 3rd in the under 19 age group and 45th overall out of 2500 runners. This is an outstanding achievement for somebody who was running his first half marathon.

The WP and Boland Waterpolo teams were announced this week and Wynberg were very well presented in all the teams. This is a sign that our polo is on the way up. The following boys were selected:

WP 19A : Nick Martin
Boland 19A : Devo Sissing
WP 16A: Anthony Mac Hendrie, Jarryd Sage, Stefan Botha
WP 16B: Mark Timlin, Sean Parker, Michael Cheney
Boland 16A: Tristan Cudworth
WP 15A: Brandon Wood, Paul du Plessis, Connor Maclaughlin, Nick Enslin, Michael Pollecut
WP 15B : Michael Koen
Boland 15A: Henry McPetrie
WP 14A: Kyle Tattersall
Boland 14A Hugh Rodseth

SERVICE

Rhodes House has been very active in the past few weeks! You might ask why? And that is because we have been collecting toothpaste, toothbrushes and soap!

This all started after we had a very successful nappy drive! We are trying to build a house that is willing to serve with passion and a cheerful heart. So I put up my hand to organise the next service drive for Rhodes. Let me just add that this would have never been a success if it weren’t for M.Cheney, I.Paleker, K.Landore and J.Lamoral (who did a great job!). Then also to all the men of Rhodes, who begged their parents to go and buy things for this drive!

We donated the goodies to Happy Valley, which is a rehabilitation centre in Simon’s Town. They take many people off the streets and help them fix up their lives, by trying to find work for them, getting them self sustained, drug and alcohol rehabilitation! This centre can house up to 65 people, three meals a day are provided, and they can only stay for six months.

It was a lovely event! All the residents and the Happy Valley committee were there. It started off with a prayer and then I made a speech, then the handing out of the packs. From there we got a brief history From Mrs Dollery (who is running Happy Valley) and a tour of the grounds. The rooms were old navy buildings that stored ammunition (from 1901-1970), so the walls where extremely thick, with big metal doors. The fun was not over; they provided us with an entire table of eats and drinks and sent us home with a plate full of eats each.

It was a life changing moment and would like to thank my Dad (Ham Stephenson) for lifting us there and back to Wynberg then taking me back home to Fish Hoek. Also to Mrs Dollery, for putting a wonderful day together for us. All the boys and their parents. My committee, and last of all to Wynberg for teaching us how to serve!

MATRIC ART EXHIBITION OPENING

The Matric 2011 Final practical examination took place over three days, from Tuesday morning to Thursday afternoon. Three outside invigilators moderated the work.

The official opening was on Wednesday evening, the opening address was given by Andrew Lamprecht, a Wynberg Old Boy (1987). He is currently lecturing at UCT, Michaelis Art Department, as well as being a significant curator of some top exhibitions in the country. An example being the recent Tretchikoff exhibition at the Cape Town, Iziko gallery.

His speech was inspirational to pupils, parents and teacher on the value of the Wynberg brotherhood and the value of parents and teachers in the nurturing of well rounded Wynberg men. Mr Lamprecht was impressed by the standard of the works exhibited, as were parents, guests, and fellow Wynberg men.

Quote of the Week

This comment was posted on Facebook by a Grade 8 boy after last week’s Valedictory:
“Only after watching that Valedictory have I realized what it really means to be a Wynberg Man…”
