All parents and boys are reminded to write WBHS on the back of your till slips + your name when you visit the MUGG&BEAN in Cavendish or Constantia Village.
There is a special box on the wall there with WBHS on it for your till slips. Encourage your friends and family to do the same.
As with Pastis Restaurant (High Constantia shopping centre) and the MySchool Card, it is an extremely painless way of raising funds for the school.
The final soup making session took place on Wednesday, with plenty of enthusiastic volunteers. My thanks to Chris Kunz who headed up this project very well and to all the participants who so cheerfully and faithfully turned up each week, not forgetting their bring their vegetable contributions and to Miss van Eck and Mr Biggs for their assistance. This year we made about three times as much soup as we have in the past!
After the soup was made, five boys had the opportunity to visit the Wynberg night shelter and to gain a better understanding of the life of homeless adults in our area. It is a surprisingly spacious place, with a large well-tended vegetable garden, housing 55 residents who get three meals a day as well as a bed in a dormitory and ablution facilities. It was obvious that many people who stay there are in a desperate situation.
The boys helped to serve supper to the residents in the dining room and then dished up their own home-made soup outside, to a group of very hungry people off the street who really appreciated a hot, nutritious meal.
It has been an outstanding week for Wynberg sport. It started on Friday night with our Rugby team winning the 43rd annual Villagers Seven-a-Side Rugby Tournament. We last won it in 2008 and it is an outstanding achievement to have won it again. We beat Rondebosch 29-12 in the semi-finals and then beat Bishops 31-19 in the final. They played great Sevens scoring some scintillating tries.
The great sporting weekend continued on Saturday morning at Fairmont High School where all three of our Hockey A teams played in their respective knock out finals, while the 16Bs played in the grass final. Our 16Bs started the morning on a good note by beating Table View 16As 6-1 in the final. The First Hockey team then proceeded to produce an outstanding defensive effort to Beat Bishops 3-1 in the under 19 final. What made this match even more remarkable was that 3 weeks earlier we had lost 2-5 to Bishops. The First Hockey team have had an outstanding season and rank up there with the best that Wynberg has produced. Unfortunately the 16As could not pull off a win in their final losing to Rondebosch, but doing very well to get there after a very average start to the season. The 14As completed an outstanding weekend of sport and an excellent hockey season by beating SACS 2-1 in their final.
On Monday and Tuesday the interhouse soccer was played with about 200 of our boys participating in this eagerly contested competition. De Waal, Wellington, Van Riebeeck and De Villiers all reached the semi-finals in the junior competition, while Littlewood, Rhodes, Van Riebeeck and Lorie reached the senior semi-finals which all still need to be played.
Our under 15 and 19 soccer teams both played Westerford yesterday. Unfortunately the seniors lost 0-3 and the juniors lost 1-3. Both teams play Pinelands next Thursday.
The point of the Quote of the Week is to lead to a discussion between parents and son. This week’s quote is from Aristotle – an ancient Greek philosopher:
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not a single good act, but a habit.
