Following months of preparations, the Wynberg Highland Gathering took place on Saturday 14th October 2017. This annual event has evolved from a very small solo piping competition in the Nausbaum in 2015, to a mini band and highland dancing competition at the John Baxter theatre in 2016, to a full highland gathering with pipe bands, solo piping and drumming, and Highland Dancing on the Hawthornden.

This year we received just over 30 entries which would result in 144 individual performances across the Junior, Amateur, and Senior grades. The Highland dancers had 25 competitors, also an increase from 2016.

With the Gathering in its first year on this large scale, it took a big effort on the part of a very small but active parent group without whom this day could not have been the success it was. I would like to thank the committee and the extended parents’ group for all their help and hard work.

A special mention must also be made to Jeremy Petersen and his ground staff for their massive contribution and efforts on the day to make sure everything ran smoothly. The WBHS sound and lighting crew were also phenomenal in their duties, they really worked hard under a lot of pressure at times. They deserve a lot of praise.

In addition to the local bands who entered, it was wonderful to welcome two traveling bands to our Gathering: St Andrew’s College Pipe Band from Grahamstown and the 1st Medical Battalion Pipes and Drums from Durban. There were also a number of competitors and judges who flew in from Johannesburg and East London.

Following a spectacular Massed Pipes and Drums display, three folk bands entertained us through the evening, providing foot tapping tunes which kept everyone entertained. A huge thanks to the Castle Rock Ceilidh Band, Jenny and the Jameses, and Blacksmith for a great night. And our thanks to the Wynberg Old Boys’ Union for their hospitality and support at the Bill Bowden Pavilion

A special mention to our very own WBHS Pipe Band who once again performed fantastically well and did the school and the band proud. The results are below.

Once again thank you to everyone who supported and made the day so brilliant. We look forward to beginning the planning process for a bigger and better Gathering next year.

Mr Gareth Rudolph, MIC Wynberg Pipe Band
