Across the generations – Six Wynberg Men take to the water: Saturday 22 & Sunday 23 March saw WBHS’ Calvin Gibbs, Dylan Long and Nick Faraday compete in the Laser 4.7 Class Regatta, held at the same time as the Finn Class Western Cape Provincials. And with Wynberg Old Boys Gareth Blanckenberg (Olympic SA Laser 2000 & 2004), Paul Allardice (Matric 1989) and Gregory Davis (Olympic sailing coach, 1996) thrown in to the mix, the proud heritage of Wynberg Sailing is clearly alive and well!

Old Boy Damian Gibbs reports:

“The Laser Regatta was a Provincial Class event held over two days out at sea just outside Simon’s Town harbour. The Finn class also sailed at the same time for their Western Cape Provincials.

There were five races over two days. Four races were sailed on Saturday in tough, cold conditions with Northerly winds gusting at approximately 20 knots and a large chop. The Saturday races were sailed back to back with each race lasting 35-45 minutes. Dylan sailed three excellent races with two seconds and a third and finished the day second overall with Calvin in third place and Nick 10th. The boys were cold and tired by the third race and only too happy to come in at the end of the fourth. Fortunately none of them got seasick … Wynberg Men have strong ‘sea legs’!

Sunday was the complete opposite weather with just barely a switchy 3 knots blowing from the South and very flat water. The fleet were sent off but the wind started to disappear and eventually the race course was shortened and the fleet sent back home. Calvin ended second, Dylan fourth and Nick 12th.

The Laser class has three size sails – 4.7, Radial and Standard (sailed according to the sailor’s weight). The 4.7 is for younger sailors first entering the Laser class, with the Radial the next step up and the Standard is the biggest sail. Radial is the main junior class and also the Olympic class for women with the Standard the Olympic class for men.

The final results in the Laser 4.7 class had Dylan second, Calvin third and Nick 10th – out of a total of 13 sailors.

First girl was Nicola Burger from Westerford and first boy was Georgou Divaris from Glenwood in George.

Old Boys’ Results: Paul Allardice was second in the Laser Standard, and in the Finn class Gareth Blanckenberg 1st with Greg Davis 4th.”
