Wynberg Cricket: Holiday Highlights 2014/2015

Wynberg Boys' High School Western Province Cricket Representatives

Wynberg’s Nicholas Scott and Kyle Verreynne were part of the WP U19 Cricket Team

Wynberg Cricket enjoyed a particularly busy and successful holiday period.More than 20 Wynberg cricketers represented WP at provincial weeks staged across the country during the initial weeks of December. The WP 17A side, featuring Tristan de Beer and Dyllan Matthews, returned as national champions, while Josh Breed registered a ton and Kyle Pluke a six-wicket haul for the WP 15A team.Wynberg hosted Harrow and Shrewsbury from the UK in the lead up to Christmas ahead of taking a short break ahead of the resumption of the season in the second week of January.30 enthusiastic u14 cricketers spent three busy days on the Jacques Kallis Oval attending the annual pre-season cricket camp. The boys arrived somewhat wide-eyed, just-out-of-junior-school cricketers and, hopefully, left 72 hours later with a sense of what is to come as a Wynberg Boys’ High School cricketer.

U15A at Somerset College Cricket Festival

Our talented 15A side, accompanied by Anton Grobler and Jaco Stofberg, began like a house on hire at the Somerset College Festival recording dominant wins against the hosts, Centurion and St Stithian’s before running out of steam on the penultimate afternoon to lose narrowly to Rondebosch in a T20 and Paarl Gym in a limited-overs encounter on the final morning.

1st XI at Cape Cricket Festival

The 1st XI headed to Paarl on 14/01/15 for the Boland leg of the Cape Cricket Festival and, team bonding aside during a two-night stay in the Paarl Boys’ hostel, recorded impressive wins against Pretoria Boys’ and Westville. The team returned to the Jacques Kallis Oval for the final three games of the festival defeating Noord Kaap and Northwood and losing to an inspired Garsfontein who chased Wynberg’s 241/9 in a 50 overs-a-side contest with 20 overs to spare. Notable highlights included Jordan Holgate’s maiden ton for the 1st XI (127* Garsfontein), Gareth Ramsay’s 90 v Noord Kaap and skipper Dyllan Matthews’ 6/42 v Noord Kaap.

Congratulations Kyle Verreynne

Wynberg Boys' High School, Kyle Verreynne

Kyle Verreynne

The most exciting news, from an individual point of view, has been that of Kyle Verreynne’s holiday achievements. Kyle scored a hundred for the WP 19A side v Free State at Coke Week in Pretoria and, in so doing, gained selection to the SA Schools’ XI. No Wynberg Grade 11 had achieved this feat since Richard Levi a decade ago.

Further impressive performances ensued and, as a result, Kyle was named a member of the SA u19 team that will tour Bangladesh in April and made his debut for the WP senior side (one level below Cobras) against Griquas in a three-day game played at Newlands between 22/01/15 and 24/01/15.
