On Monday 21 September, we held our Winter Awards Assembly. All the cultural trophies as well as the trophies for winter sport were handed out and this was then followed by the awarding of Colours, Blues and Honours for culture as well as winter sport. Our guest of honour for the event was Nic Molyneux, an Old Boy (2004), a South African Waterpolo captain and he is currently our Waterpolo pro coach. His message to the boys was that there is no substitute for hard work and he explained how role models had played such a positive role in his life in helping him overcome some of the setbacks that he had to face in his journey to the top. It is always a highlight recognising the achievements of our sportsmen, our musicians, our actors and those boys that give back to the school in the form of service. Our vocal ensemble and steel band were recognised for their achievements with a number of boys getting top awards, while the highlight of the assembly is always the awarding of the Casper Cup, for the Sportsman of the Year, which this year went to Kyle Verreynne, for his achievements on the hockey and cricket fields.
The 1st XI; 15As and 14As were all involved in pre-season action last weekend. The 1st XI posted 234/8 against Boland Landbou in a 50-overs-a-side affair on the Jacques Kallis Oval. Kyle Verreynne top-scored with 112, his 3rd 100+ score of the year. The Boland Landbou top-order capitalised on some wayward bowling on a batsman-friendly surface to cruise to a six-wicket victory with 10 overs to spare.
The 15As and 14As faired batter against Reddam and Boland Landbou respectively and registered respective 22-run and 130-run victories.
Pre-tour preparation continues this long weekend with the 1st XI hosting Cape Town Cricket Club and North cliff from Johannesburg on Thursday and Saturday respectively, while the Stayers’ XI and the 14As travel to Pinelands on Saturday.
