There has been very little sport since the final clash with SACS. Our 16A Hockey team did play in the KO final, but unfortunately lost 1-2 to Rondebosch. On Saturday we participated in a 5-a-side Soccer tournament at St Josephs. Our under 15 team won two matches, drew one and lost one and was awarded the trophy for sportsmanship. Our under 19 team got to the semifinals and ended up coming third. Bongo Pangwa was the top goal scorer at the tournament. Our U19 Soccer team also played Rondebosch in a match on Wednesday, but unfortunately lost.
The Villager Sevens was rained out last Friday and it was postponed to this Friday evening (7 September). We have entered three teams in this tournament and our 1st Team should stand a good chance of defending their title after winning the tournament last year.
On Monday and Tuesday this week, the Interhouse Soccer was played. On Monday the juniors played with Rhodes beating Wellington in the final, while Littlewood just edged out Van Riebeeck to come third. On Tuesday the Senior Littlewood team beat Van Riebeeck in the final with Rhodes beating De Villiers for third place.
Robert Cooke has been selected for the Under 19 Boland Body Boarding team that will be taking part in the SA Champs in Durban during the school holidays. This is an outstanding achievement.
Robin Lindup needs to be congratulated for achieving a bronze medal in the Western Province Gymnastic Trials.
This week is Arbor Week which has been set aside for the planting and caring of trees. This day originated in Switzerland during the 15th century to raise awareness about the importance of trees in our society. In South Africa, Arbor Day always falls in September and was started in 1983 but extended in 1997 to a National Arbor Week.
At Wynberg we are grateful that Pam Golding Properties has donated five yellowwood trees which will be planted alongside the Silverhurst B Cricket field.
Full marks to all the matrics who are taking part in the Matric Group on Facebook. For some months they have been buzzing challenges to one another for Wynberg to return a 90% Varsity Pass Rate in matric. This group are providing ‘peer to peer’ academic support with posting of study notes, study guides and Question and Answer sessions. This online tutoring is a way to go in the future. It is Real Education. Very exciting.

A good name is all we can leave behind in the world. It is more desirable than great wealth. To be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
