On Tuesday 27 May the Mathematics Department hosted the 2014 Inter-House Mathematics Competition. It was a team-based event, which required the boys to collaborate effectively, in order to answer questions which tested the speed of their mental arithmetic. For two hours the Clegg Hall buzzed with activity, as ninety of our boys engaged in a mental race against each other and the clock.

De Villiers won both the junior (Grades 8 and 9) and the senior (Grades 10, 11 and 12) sections of the competition. Based on the success of the event, consideration may be given to making this an official inter-house event in 2015. Sincere thanks go to the support staff and the Ladies’ Association for helping with the organization of the event.

On Friday 30 May the Big Band performed at The Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival in the Baxter Concert Hall. The band performed 4 pieces and also featured both Jesse Meintjes and Jesse Julies on vocals which was a first for Wynberg.

The performance was well received.

This past weekend Wynberg took on Bishops in our inter school fixture. Overall Wynberg got the better of Bishops in a hotly contested weekend.

Rugby: Following the announcement of the WP schools teams Wynberg had all the motivation they needed going into a match where 8 Bishops boys were selected into the WP teams. The 1st team beat Bishops 20-19 in a highly anticipated match. With 18 matches of rugby being played, we won 11, drew 2 and lost 5.

Hockey: The first team went up by two goals to Bishops fairly early in the game. Bishops fought back to eventually draw the game 2-2. Out of 13 games played, we won 8, lost 3 and drew 2.

Chess: The 1st team beat SACS 3-1 and the 3rd team beat WGHS 1st team 3-1.

Squash: Bishops got the better of Wynberg at squash in the Super League played on Thursday and in the inter school fixture over the weekend. The 15D team was the only team to manage a win.

Triathlon: The following boys were awarded certificates at the World Triathlon Series hosted in Cape Town:
James Thompson competed with Karen Roodman as a WBHS/WGHS team. She swam and cycled whilst he did the running section. Their overall time was 1 hour 30 minutes 30 seconds.

The WP age-group sides will be announced at a ceremony at Newlands on Tuesday 10 June.

Grey: After much deliberation, it has been decided to stick with the schedule that Wynberg will travel down to Grey PE in 2016 in our 175th Year.

This weekend the Rugby takes on Boland Landbou at home and the Hockey takes on Stellenberg (away), Milnerton (home) and Westerford (home). The online programme can be found here: http://bit.ly/1mfo4XG

Take Note: We have been informed by the Traffic Department that they will be doing extra patrols this weekend and at all future home fixtures. Illegal parking will be a R300 fine, parking obstructing a drive-way will be R750, and tow-away another R1100 on top of that and there is another fee to be released from the pound. Please park with consideration for our neighbours.

There is an exciting new Cultural Event on the calendar! Come and enjoy an evening of Jazz music at the Alf Morris Music Centre next Saturday night, during the long week-end.

The talented Wynberg Boys’ and Girls’ High Jazz Bands will be performing and in addition the well – known Delft Big Band, who recently toured France, will be the guest artists.

Would anyone who purchased a school umbrella in the last 2 weeks, please return these to the school (attention Jeanette Muller) as we have had a manufacturers recall on them. The umbrellas will be replaced with a new improved umbrella when they arrive.

Please note that new stock of Supporters jackets have been received. The shop also has a good stock of long grey pants, shorts, jerseys and scarves.

The 2nd Hand clothing shop is always looking for good quality stock of clothing (especially rain jackets and tracksuit pants).
