A reminder to parents of boys learning to drive. Mekor Ford and Mazda Claremont have donated a Ford Ikon car to the school for the express purpose of ensuring our boys receive a high standard in driver’s education.

Traffic accidents are the highest cause of accidental death in the age group 18 – 30 with between 20 000 – 35 000 people dying each year. This equates to 1 death every 21 minutes of a 24 hours day.

In partnership with Mekor Ford and Mazda Claremont, we have identified two driving instructors to provide the boys with the skills and knowledge necessary to become safe drivers on our roads.

We encourage you to make use of these facilities through the school. Lessons are being charged at a reduced rate of R125 per hour. These lessons will be done in the school vehicle and arrangements can be made directly with the instructors. They in turn will set up an appointment with your son and meet him at school to conduct his lessons. You can also contact Charmaine Manley in the front office should you mislay the numbers.

Driving Instructors contact details:

Peter Williamson 082 925 4346

We are looking for a parent to volunteer to run the second hand shop at school. There are parents that will assist you, but we need someone to ‘champion’ this.

This entails opening the shop once a week (whenever suits you), receiving stock, sorting, pricing and selling.

Please contact Jeanette Muller jmuller@wbhs.org.za if you are willing to assist.

Don’t miss the evening at the Bill Bowden Pavilion when MC Gavin Rich will draw Corné on his days with the Stormers, the Boks and his career off field.

Tickets, on or before 5 May: R80 from Hugh Rowles 021-7972101 or Glenda Martindale 021-7972100. Email: hrowles @wbhs.org.za.

A company known as Kidz Express has been operating in Gauteng for the past 10 years. They offer a transport service where they collect children at home, take them to school and bring them home in the afternoons. They are trying to start their business in Cape Town and have approached the school. We have agreed that they can market themselves through the school, but that it will remain a partnership or agreement between parents and Kids Express and that the school will not get involved.

Transporting SA’s school children to and from school and ad hoc activities, in a safe and comfortable environment for over a decade. We would like to extend this service to you and your children. Please browse our website for more information and contact details. www.kidzexpress.co.za”

On the 25-27 April, Wynberg will be staging a new event in the Wynberg Calendar, Concert in the Quad. This magical evening will take place in the newly upgraded Jowell Quad under the stars. We had a number of teams undertake tours this holiday. Lessons were learnt, techniques polished and foundations set for the season ahead.

Rugby: Our 1st team took part in the Stoops Rugby Festival hosted by Tygerberg High School. They won both their games showing an immense amount of courage. The U15 team went to Paarl and displayed their same courageous fighting spirit in winning all three of their games. The u16A won a tough game again Uru Cure from Argentina on the school fields.

Hockey: Our 1st, U/16A and U/14A teams took part in NOMADS. The 1st team returned unbeaten from KES in the process claiming the big scalps of KES and Maritzburg College, while the u16A lost won game in five in their festival held at Wynberg.

The 15A team went on tour to York where they played in a U/16 Tournament where they held their own against tough opposition. The U14’s went to Hilton and returned creditable results.

We have a big sporting weekend ahead against RBHS. The 1st Hockey play at 17h40 at WPCC today while the 1st Rugby play at noon tomorrow at RBHS. All Wynberg boys are reminded that it is compulsory that they support either the 1st Rugby game or the 1st hockey game. However all Wynberg boys are encouraged to support both fixtures.

The first batch of about 2500 donated Easter eggs were collected this week by a local church. These will be distributed to children in local squatter camps.
Next week the other 4500 eggs will be distributed to the Fellowship Church Bible Christian School in Ottery, orphanages, Living Hope in Capricorn Park and 42 boxes are being sent to children in Stilbaai.

Thanks again to everybody who contributed so generously to this Service Drive.

The first Parent Teacher meeting for 2014 will take place on Tuesday 15 April 2014 between 17h30 and 19h30. We encourage you to make contact with any teacher in whose subject your son is struggling. It is better to nip a problem in the bud than wait until it has bloomed into something huge.

The booking sheets will be up in the school foyer from 10 to 14 April for parents to book sessions with particular teachers. If it is more convenient, you may get your son to book a session for you on these sheets.

All meetings (10 minutes) are by booked appointment only and will take place in the relevant teacher’s classroom or office. We encourage your sons to accompany you to these meetings.

At the end of 2012 Suzelle Stander moved on to practise art full time.  Hasan taught part time in 2012 and in 2013 took on a Grade 8 Technology class as well as teaching Grade 9 Visual Art. He stepped into the breach in June 2013 when Mrs Colman took leave to recuperate from a serious illness for the last half of the year. He filled her shoes admirably. He  sadly   left Wynberg at the end of Term 1 in 2014  to take up a full-time position at Lalela Projects in Hout Bay where he will work with his brother Husain. His place has been taken by Ms Laura Diedericks a Michaelis Graduate, who has  brought with her a wealth of information and enthusiasm.

Blakeys Beans Coffee Shop now has WiFi. Pop in with friends and/or a laptop to sample the coffee.

“It is not so much about choosing a career when matrics start studying at University but choosing a subject they are interested in.”

Herman Visagie, at a recent staff meeting, quoting from Dr Max Price’s speech at the National Boys’ School Conference
