WBHS Pipe Band Heads to SA Pipe Band Championships

The Wynberg Pipe Band Kilt

The Wynberg Pipe Band Kilt

On Friday the 28th July, the Wynberg Boys’ High School Pipe Band heads north to Johannesburg to compete at the South African Pipe Band Championships.

Since the band’s inception in October 2014, we have been working hard, first to play “Men of Wynberg” at the 175th Anniversary and now, almost 2 seasons later, to represent the pipe band and the school in the wider pipe band community.

The band will be competing in the Novice Juvenile Grade against some of the country’s most reputable schools with rich Scottish heritage, including Jeppe Boys’ High School and King Edward’s School. The KES Pipe Band was established in 1946 while Jeppe Boys’ Pipe Band was established in 1944.

The Championship takes place at Benoni High school, east of Johannesburg, on Saturday 29th July 2017. We are very fortunate that the Jeppe Pipe Band parents are hosting us and look forward to reciprocating in October 2017 when they attend our Wynberg Highland Gathering.

The band has worked extremely hard over the holidays; practicing three times a week. We look forward to experiencing the thrill of competition, but at the same time having fun and developing new friendships with people who share the same passion for piping and drumming.

A big thanks to the tutors and parents for their support, and special thanks to the boys and girls for their hard work and effort in getting us to standard worthy of entering the competition circle.

May this experience motivate and encourage you all to take your piping and drumming journey to the next level.

The bandsmen going on tour are:
Ethan Robbertze
Ewan Taylor
Cameron Bishop
Connor Pollock
Catherine MacDonald
Greg MacDonald
Greg Postings
James Mitchell
Luke Marais
Reece McMinn
Tristan Schonfeldt
Troy Charman
Yiming Kong

Good Luck and have fun.
