Sailing: Wynberg Men Excel at Laser Nationals

Wynberg Boys' High School Sailing: Dylan LongWynberg Boys and Old Boys were once again on the podium at last weekend’s Laser Nationals held at Point Yacht Club on Durban beach. The Laser class is the main breeding ground for South Africa’s Olympic sailors, one of whom was Wynberg Old Boy Gareth Blanckenberg. This regatta had over 60 sailors from across the country and some as young as 14 and the eldest well into their 70’s.

Dylan Long and Calvin Gibbs competed in the Laser Radial fleet and enjoyed one of the most competitive regattas South African junior sailing has experienced for a while. Although the results reflect the top 4 sailors finishing close together, at least the top 6 in the fleet of 25 sailors never gave each other an inch during racing. With one day to go and two races left there were only 4 points between the top 4 sailors. Each of the 10 races saw the lead change and sailors pushing themselves mentally and physically thought the 60-90 minute races. During the whole regatta Calvin and Dylan were always in the top few positions of the fleet and out sailed local sailors who had the advantage of local conditions.

On the last day, Dylan pipped Calvin with a 2 point lead and clinched the title with Calvin placed 2nd.

Wynberg old boy, Alistair Keytel finished third in men’s Standard Laser fleet and was only beaten by a previous Olympic campaigner and one of his training partners.

Fellow Wynberg Girls’ sailor, Sarah-Jane Deary, finished 2nd and first girl in the Laser 4.7 class.
