Wynberg’s recently refurbished Jowell Quad resounded to the sounds of music on Friday & Saturday. The Quad, magnificently upgraded through the generosity of the Jowell Family, transformed into a music auditorium showcasing the the incredible talents of Wynberg Musicians.
Conceptualized and produced by Mr Julian Taylor, and with a surround stage built by Mr Anthony Sparrow, the event is certain to become an annual ‘fixture’ at the heart of the School. Our congratulations to Mr Taylor, the sound and lighting crew and the performers who had the audience clamoring for more. A wonderful celebration of music in a fresh and inspired venue.
Headmaster, Mr Richardson, writes about Wynberg’s Jowell Quad
Named after the contribution of the Jowell family to Wynberg, it was a proud moment when we were able to greet delegates to the National Boys’ School Conference in March with our new-look quad. The concept of the Jowell Quad was the European ‘piazza’ feel where people would congregate round tables under the trees. Tinkling water is always a feature in piazzas – so the fishpond was upgraded and is now central to the quad which has been completely relaid and tiled. The setting is completed by flowers, shrubs and trees which have successfully broken the stark contours of the school buildings.
Just like as if they were congregating in a piazza, generations of future Wynberg boys will now have a convivial and welcoming area where they can collect together for discussions, meals and general socialising.
Four members of the Jowell family passed through Wynberg in the 1940’s and ‘50’s. Brothers Neil and Cecil are well known in the South African business world, while their cousins Sir Jeffrey and Sir Roger Jowell were both knighted by the Queen for their contribution to law and economics respectively in the UK.
