Mr Jan de Waal (BA, BEd, MEd) appointed as the new Headmaster of Wynberg from January 2016

Wynberg Boys' High School New Headmaster Mr Jan de Waal

The Governing Body of Wynberg Boys’ High School and the Western Cape Education Department have announced that Jan de Waal  (BA, BEd, MEd)  has been appointed the new Headmaster of Wynberg from January 2016.

Mr de Waal is a vastly experienced teacher and principal.  After graduating from Union High School in Graaff Reinet and completing university at UCT, he commenced his teaching career as a history and Afrikaans teacher at Wynberg Boys’ High School before moving on to Rhodes High School.  He then returned to Wynberg as a Head of Department before accepting a further promotion as Principal of Simonstown in 1997.

In 2001, he took over the principalship of Sweet Valley Primary and succeeded in turning it into the school of choice in the Constantia Valley.  In 2007, he moved to Somerset College as head of their Prep School.

He will now be returning to his roots where he began his teaching career.   During his time as a teacher at the school, he coached rugby and cricket  with great success and was instrumental in making Wynberg a leading force in the school squash league.  In addition, he was the driving force behind the introduction of the night school, CWESI, to Wynberg in 1995.  He also managed to find the time to complete his MEd thesis ‘A Study in Effective Schooling in Genadendal’ which has enabled him to have a wide perspective of the problems in South African education.

He is married to Ann and has two sons Jan and Simon.  He also has two step-sons, Jared and Robin.  All four boys attended Wynberg Boys’ High School.

Mr de Waal takes over the reins of the school in its 175th year.  He is a prominent educationalist and well-known in the southern peninsula.  He has the track record, the expertise and the experience to take this school to exciting new levels.
