The Chess Team: Jason Raad, Sean Cheney, Guy Green (captain) Mr L Moser (Manager), Darren van der Valk.

On Friday and Saturday 12 & 13 April 2013, our Chess boys competed for the fourth time in the Grey College Invitational Chess Tournament. This is a prestigious Tournament consisting of the top 32 schools from around the country. There were 62 teams in total and Wynberg were placed in a very creditable 17th position. The team of Guy Green, Jason Raad, Sean Cheney and Darren van der Valk scored 2 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw.

vs HSSentraal A (Free State) W 3-1
vs Waterkloof C (Gauteng) L 1-3
vs Grey College A (Free State) L 0-4
vs Durban HS B (KZN) W 3½-½
vs Grey College B (Free State) D 2-2

The Tournament was won by Waterkloof again. However,
our boys played well and improved on last year’s final position.

Guy Green must be commended on an outstanding tournament as he was our best performer with 4 wins out of five matches, playing at Board number 1, where most of his opponents were National level Chess players. Worthy of mention too is Sean Cheney who, as a grade 9 boy on his first tour, managed to win three of his five matches playing at Board number 3.
