Fire-Versary: 47 Matric A’s from the English Ashes 2016

Wynberg's Fire-Versary

Friday 11 August 2017: Just over a year ago Wynberg woke up to the devastating news that fire had engulfed and gutted the top floor of the school’s C Block. Every English Classroom was destroyed along with the students’ year work, teaching equipment vaporised, personal possessions lost forever.

But the Wynberg spirit of Supera Moras was at work to overcome obstacles, brought home dramatically when we interviewed English Head, Ms Jocelyn de Mink, in her new classroom on the first anniversary of the fire:

“Notwithstanding the challenges presented to our Matrics of 2016 (revision material lost, the daily disruptions of renovations and shared academic space, and being forced to write mock matric exams off-campus), the entire Matric Class  returned a 100% pass rate, with an incredible 47 A’s in English.”

An emotional Ms De Mink continued: “To say I am proud of our boys is a massive understatement. I remember being in tears outside the school with so many others, the smell of burnt wood and soot, a greyness all around, not knowing how I was going to face my Matrics the next morning, with nothing but a shared trauma between us, and in a strange work-space. But they did it, and helped me to help them and my English colleagues to work on, and go higher in our targets. My thanks to Peter, Juanita & Chris  for banding in amidst the chaos, to bring out the very best in all that is the Wynberg Way.”

A’s from the Ashes, indeed.
