The final two rounds of the Jamie Tindill Memorial Chess Tournament took place on Monday 4 August in the Wynberg Library. Herzlia were too strong for Pinelands and won 13 -3 while Rondebosch and Wynberg played a thrilling duel, finally decided on the last match with Rondebosch edging out the host team 10 – 6.

In the 3rd/4th place playoff another closely contested match saw Pinelands finish 9 – 7 over Wynberg. The final between Herzlia and Rondebosch ended in a nail-biting draw with Herzlia finally being awarded the trophy by virtue of winning more individual games.

Wynberg’s Sean Cheney played two magnificent games winning both his matches against strong players who are ranked far above him in the National Chess rankings. Jared Wilson likewise, playing much stronger opponents managed a win and a draw on the night – commendable achievements!

The Wynberg team consisted of  Sean Cheney, Lovell Joseph, James Roche (captain), Maverick Pearson, Jared Wilson, Michael Kievits (Rounds 1 – 3) and Daanyaal Effendi (semis and playoffs).

The Arbiter was Old Boy, Guy Green who managed the Tournament with aplomb and settled all difficult matters with dignity and insight.
