Circular 40

22 June 2012

Dear Parents and Guardians

You will receive your son’s report on the final day of term. In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, we are trying to cut down on the large amount of paper that usually accompanies reports by sending home some of these enclosures electronically.

1. Progression / Promotion

On the report card you will find the requirements for a pupil to move from one grade to the next. If your son were to repeat his current results at the end of the year you will be able to gauge whether or not he will progress.
Please note that these progression / promotion requirements are really minimal requirements – we have been working hard to get across the message to your sons that each one should be striving to achieve the very best that HE can achieve and that 50% is a very minimum that should be accepted in any subject. This is what we call a Wynberg Pass.

2. Subject Changes in grades 10 to 12

No further subject changes can be made for grade 12 for the remainder of the year. Grade 10 and 11 pupils have already been issued with and returned relevant forms for changes; all changes are dependent on space being available in relevant classes. The full process must be completed by Monday 16 July 2012. Thereafter no further subject changes are possible for the remainder of the year. Please note that, for obvious reasons, requests for changes of teacher within a subject cannot be considered.

3. House Head, Tutor and Headmaster’s comments

To ensure that we have as much teaching time available as possible, we have moved the examinations to as late in the term as we could. We have also reduced the number of days that this period spans. Due to this, the small amount of time to prepare reports for distribution by the end of term unfortunately precludes time for administering written comments on these reports.

4. Parent-Teacher-Pupil Meeting

We have our next meeting on 24 July 2012 from 15h00 to 19h00. All meetings are by appointment only. To book a 10-minute meeting with any one of your son’s teachers, please ask him to fill in one of the slots on the booking sheets. These will be available in the foyer of the school from the 17th to the 23rd of July.

We hope that you enjoy the holiday with your son. My three pieces of standard holiday homework for each boy in my classes might well be useful for all boys:
• Read a book that has the potential to change your life or the way you see the world.
• Visit a place where humans have collected their ideas.
• Find a spot as far from anything man-made as possible and do nothing for an hour, but think.

Kind Regards
Neil Eddy
