On Friday and Saturday 17 & 18 February 2012, our Chess boys competed for the third time in the Grey College Invitational Chess Tournament. This is a prestigious Tournament consisting of the top 38 schools from around the country. There were 80 teams in total and Wynberg were placed in a very creditable 23rd position.

vs Hodisa A (Free State)                   W 3-1

vs Brandwag B (N Cape)                  L 1½-2½

vs Affies U15A (Gauteng)                 L 1½-2½

vs Marais Viljoen A (Gauteng)         W 3-1

vs Affies A (Gauteng)                        L 0-4

The Tournament was won by Waterkloof who are always in the top three. We were unlucky to play two of the Affies teams – one of the strongest Chess schools in the country. In the last round we had to play their A team consisting of four SA rated players and  thus dropped out of the top 10 – had we won that last game we would have been placed somewhere between 7th and 16th.

Jason Raad must be commended on an outstanding tournament as he was our best performer with 3 wins out of five matches, playing at Board number 4.

The team of Guy Green, Matthew Bannister, Cuan Stephenson and Jason Raad showed great stamina by playing strong Chess in very difficult circumstances.
