We’re thrilled to announce that our EGD and Technology teacher, Roland Rudd, has been declared the Best Secondary School Educator in the Western Cape for 2011 by the Western Cape Education Department. He has also received an award for Excellence in Education. This is a wonderful achievement for any teacher, but especially for one so young. He now goes on to represent the Western Cape in the National Teaching Awards Competition.
Roland was born into a family of educationalists; his great grandfather and mother were education inspectors in Cape Town – their inspection cards are on display in the Education Museum at the Centre For Education Conservation in Wynberg. His father is the current Deputy Headmaster of Grey College Primary and his mother was also a teacher.
Roland attended Grey College Bloemfontein; he played water polo for the Grey College 1st team as well as for Free State, and also captained the 2nd Soccer team. He subsequently graduated with distinction, with a B.Ed degree from the University of the Free State, with English and Drawing Science as his majors. Roland was awarded Best Education Student and Best Student in Practical Teaching of his year. Whilst at University, he worked as an intern in the English Department, played Varsity water polo and also coached the women’s water polo team.
Since joining Wynberg Boys’ High in 2006, Roland has taught English, Technology (Grades 8 and 9), and EGD (grades 10-12). He has occupied the following positions:
In addition to the above, and whilst still teaching, Roland successfully completed an architectural diploma through Intec College.
Congratulations to Roland – and to his lovely wife, Karen, who is so supportive of both her husband and this school.
