Wynberg remains, as ever, serious about sport!

Matric Sport
Please note that matrics are expected to continue their commitment to team sport in the 4th term. Coaches will be sympathetic to a reduced practice load if the boy communicates well in advance.

Water Polo
Excitement is building as preparations run fast and furious for our 11th annual Ian Melliar Cup, starting Thursday 21 September and playing through 64 back-to-back matches until the finals on Sunday 24 September. This event, initiated by WBHS in 2007 is the biggest U15 boys’ water polo tournament of kind in South Africa, attracting teams from around the country to a slick, entertaining top level competition. We’re thrilled to have Speck Pumps back this year (third year in succession) as our headline sponsor – once again there will be plenty of sponsors’ prizes for those at the matches, and online at home – follow the tournament on our dedicated Facebook Page.

Please join us poolside for all the action and atmosphere, and online as we prepare for bigger innovations in our media coverage!

Cycling
Congratulations to Dániyal Matthews – The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) world rankings have been released and Dániyal is currently lying 5th in the world for the Madison and 8th in the world for the Scratch. These rankings are based on the points earned by SA riders at the National Track Champs and the African Continental Champs earlier this year. It does not include the points earned at the recent Junior World Track Champs where Dániyal also performed very well.

Hockey
With the hockey league season over, the U14A and U16A sides were still preparing for the Western Province Knockout finals to be played at Hartleyvale when last we reported. The U14As started the day well for Wynberg, outplaying Rondebosch to win 3 – 0. An emphatic win, and a fitting end to a fantastic season for the boys.

The U16s then looked to take inspiration from the younger counterparts, also facing a strong Rondebosch side in their final. Unfortunately the result did not go our way in this instance and we went down 3 – 2. The boys played hard until the very end and showed true Supera Moras Spirit, but good Rondebosch defence in the dying minutes allowed them hold out for the result.

Rugby

Saturday 9 September: ninety 2018 new Wynberg Grade 8s and their families converged on the Hawthornden Field for a taste of what to expect from Wynberg Rugby in the season ahead – a huge thanks to our coaches who spent the morning with the new intake, giving them an insight into Wynberg’s Rugby Culture. With Wynberg Boys’ Junior School U7, U8, and U9 2017 teams and families arriving later in the morning for their end of season fun family lunch, the atmosphere and the enthusiasm in the air spoke volumes of the passion for rugby, and the excitement of a new season with new beginnings.

The morning can best be summed up by these quotes on Social Media after the two events:

“A huge thank you to Mr Childs and his team for a fabulous u14 Rugby Meet today for next year’s Grade 8! Wonderful time had by all and another inspiration towards our excitement at joining the Wynberg Home next year!”

‘Fantastic to see changes happening! Wynberg number one! … Real pleasure to see my old school so focussed, so on track … and the boys [really enjoying their rugby]!’

Friday 1 September: Mr Mike Engelbrecht (MIC Rugby), handed over a collection of boots from Wynberg Boys to Mr Mfundo Galada from Mfuleni Schools Rugby. Mfuleni Schools Rugby have players across all ages from U7 – U16 and are doing sterling work offering the sport to kids who would otherwise not have the opportunity to play rugby.

The boots will go a long way towards helping the boys that cannot afford new boots. Anyone wanting to get involved and assist the club further should contact Mr Galada on mfundo@ubuntufirst.co.za or 072 954 8746.

Villager Sevens, Friday 1 September 2017: An enthusiastic and energetic Wynberg Sevens side, coached by Old Boy and Blitz Bok, Dylan Sage delivered some top quality Sevens despite only having two training sessions.

They boys were up against Bergvliet High School in game number one and managed to comfortably beat the boys from Meadowridge. Dylan Munro started his day well and quickly became the thorn in the side of the Bergvliet boys.

Game number two saw Wynberg up against sevens specialists Langa, which turned out to be Wynberg’s best performance of the day seeing us scoring numerous tries from all parts of the field. David Botha’s restarts and Cameron Bowes’ aerial skills secured endless possession for our boys which lead to a number of well worked team tries.

Game number three (and into the knock out rounds) saw Wynberg take on Bishops B team. Once again we started well and shot ahead on the scoreboard. Bishops came back in the second half to lead the game with only a minute to play. The Wynberg boys fought hard and managed to score under the poles and covert the try to to sneak the game.

SACS A were our next hurdle and proved to be one step to far for the boys in 2017. We went down by three tries early. We managed to fight back with two tries of our own, which made for an interesting last few minutes. Sadly we were not able to convert a few opportunities and SACS managed to score again and hold onto the result.

The boys were in great spirits all day and loved the experience.
