Wynberg 1st XI Hockey at the Saints Easter Festival, 23 – 28 March 2016: a great tour in the best spirit of school hockey festivals – new friendships, great competition, intense rivalries and sound lessons learnt to start the new season.

Matches, Results and Scorers:

Game 1: versus Parktown (7-0)

The first tour day was always going to be a big challenge for our boys. Wynberg flew from Cape Town at 06h00 on match day, were transported to Saints at 09h00, and waited around until 16h30 to take on Parktown, then only heading home with their host families after 20h30. The team started the game very well and went 4-0 up early on effectively eliminating any contest. Madison (2); February; Alford; Sproul; Dollman  and Martin were all goal scorers.

Game 2: versus St. Albans (1-0)

The scoreline makes the game look closer than it actually was. The St Albans boys gave their everything (especially in defence) while Wynberg were careless in the multiple offensive circle entries they had throughout the game. Half time (0-0) was effective for the team to reassess, stay calm and mentally strong to cross the line with a 1-0 win. Wade Dollman scored a field goal.

Game 3: versus Durban High School (10-1)

Wynberg’s incredible intensity at the start of the game turned this encounter into a completely one-sided affair. Wynberg went into a 4-0 lead within the first 10 minutes, killing off the contest. A positive was that this intensity was maintained for long periods in the game rewarding the team with goals. Goal scorers included: Madison; Alford (2); Cooke; Alexander; Dollman; February; Solomons and Heynes.

Game 4: versus St. Stithians (2-1)

This was always going to be the “big” game for our Wynberg Team after last year’s loss at the same festival. The big crowd were treated to a really classy performance from both teams with Wynberg edging the game, coming from a goal behind, ultimately showing superb mental strength and leadership in the process. The goal scorers included Wade Dollman and Tristan Cooke.

Game 5: versus St. Andrews (1-4)

A very frustrating and disappointing game for the Wynberg team against a good St. Andrews side but not a side 3 goals better than us! Wynberg arrived after a day’s rest with “heavy legs and minds” taking 15 minutes to get into the game –by which stage the damage had been done. Wynberg camped in their half and circle after half time but were careless in finishing. Lessons must be taken from this encounter and applied to our performances when the Cape League commences. Goal scorer was Tristan Cooke.

Leadership, Mental Toughness and Work Ethic:

This was a big feature of this Tour to St Stithians. The boys did incredibly well to embrace these concepts throughout the Tour, falling short on the last day, unfortunately. Valuable lessons were learnt on the Tour and the Team will come back to the Cape Town League and Nomads Tour as a stronger unit.
