Wynberg Boys’ High School is recognized as one of the country’s premiere water polo schools where every player can expect an optimal learning environment with consistently superior coaching, training facilities, equipment and kit. Wynberg Boys High School is a school of proud tradition and high values. We have a history of producing young men that are well balanced and empowered on the sporting front, which is one of the four pillars on which the ethos of our school is based.
Commitment
• To excellence in and out of the pool.
• To making decisions in the school based on what’s in the best interest of the players.
• To create a cohesive inclusive water polo club environment.
• To the continued development of coaching through ongoing education.
• To promote the growth, as well as the development, of the game in the community.
Pride
• In the responsibility we assume in each and every player’s development and achievements.
• In learning the value of teamwork and creating a sense of accountability to each other.
Passion
• For the game.
• For loyalty to people and organization
• Balance
• That Wynberg Boys’ High School provides an environment which is as concerned with overall player development and retention as it is with talent identification and competitive excellence.
In 1969, Peter Broster, the swimming coach, started water polo as a form of swimming fitness training. A league was started in 1970, with our main sporting rivals, namely Rondebosch and S.A.C.S and on occasions matches were also played against Sea Point.
In 1978, Ian Melliar, was the first Wynberg Boy to be chosen to play for the South African under 19 team. In 1979, ‘Butch Louw’, had the honour of being our first representative in the senior nation team. In 2001, Alastair Cross, started a water polo at the Wynberg Boys’ Junior School, in order to improve the skills of players entering the High School. 2002 saw the floodlighting of the swimming pool, which enabled us to play water polo at night. In 2003, our school swimming pool was heated during the winter months, and in so doing it provided the possibility of playing water polo for 12 months of the year. In 2006 Mr Rudd took over as MIC after the passing of Daryl Simms a true Wynberg legend. 2007 saw extensive renovations being done to the aquatics centre with the inner pool surface being re-surfaced, water filtration system being re-done, wooden seating being put down on the steps and a new Tuck Shop Hut established to serve the guests to Wynberg. 2007 also saw the inaugural U/15 Ian Melliar Cup, held over the 13th – 16th September, the first of its kind in the country to have professional refs and full matches with Grey P.E. winning the cup. The second tournament took place the following year in 2008 with 16 teams participating and Grey PE winning the cup for the 2nd year in a row.
The school has an excellent Old Boys Club who do extremely well in the club leagues. The coaching staff are made up of enthusiastic teachers and Old Boys who put in many hours conditioning the players. 2007 also saw the introduction of the first full time professional water polo coach, Mr David Tiltmann from Selbourne College and also a SA water polo representative. Julian Vincent a Wynberg Old Boy has now taken over the role of professional coach. In 2008 Ian Macallister was chosen in the South African Schools U/19 team. He captained Wynberg in 2007.
