Hockey at Wynberg grew from very humble beginnings in 1967 when a temporary Maths teacher and a group of Standard 9 boys asked whether it was possible to introduce hockey. The reply was positive and a game was arranged against Wynberg Girls, which gave birth to Hockey at Wynberg.
Thereafter, current Headmaster, Keith Richardson was quick to become the moving spirit behind the game. The growing pains were acute. Fears that the standard of Rugby would diminish led to the restriction of coaches, fields and players. Only boys in Standards 8, 9 and 10 were allowed to play – and then only with the permission of the master in charge of rugby and the Headmaster. A medical certificate or a strongly worded parental note was essential!
Nonetheless, Wynberg Hockey quickly grew into a formidable sport. In 1997 we were the first school in the country to obtain our own astroturf which catapulted us ahead and kept us in line with the high level of schools hockey in the rest of the world.
Hockey is currently one of the major sports at the school, with Wynberg being featured in the top ten hockey schools for a number of years. Wynberg currently have 15 teams entered into the Western Province Schools league, with major derbies being played against SACS, Rondebosch and Bishops. These derbies are always an exciting spectacle and in the past few years we have grown the notion of moving these clashes to a Friday night under lights, which makes for a fantastic atmosphere. The 1st XI and the U16A’s regularly tour in order to attend the top hockey festivals in the country.
Wynberg Hockey is proud to say that we continue to go from strength to strength. If we look back over the past decade we can attribute the success of Wynberg hockey to many things, including:
• A top class Astroturf and resources, with a vision for continued upgrade and improvement of these.
• The effort, teamwork and input from passionate and skilled coaches and staff, many of whom are currently, or have been, National, Provincial and High Performance coaches, selectors or managers.
• A Hockey Parent support base, who work alongside the school to ensure Hockey remains at top level.
• Boys coming to Wynberg who want to grow their own individual passion and skill for the game.
• A desire from coaching staff and players to remain up to date with regard to the current trends in Hockey, as well as looking to do things ‘differently’ in order to remain at the top level of Hockey schools in the country – all helping our players to perform and win through hard work and – most importantly – to have fun and enjoy the game.
We believe that it is these things that set Wynberg Hockey apart. However, the paleyers are a key component and we therefore encourage every boy who picks up a stick and takes to the field wearing the school colours, to do so with passion and a desire to continue the proud heritage of the sport at the school.
Wynberg has consistently produced Provincial and National representatives. Paul Revington went on to coach the National Men’s team from 2003 – 2006. The most recent Springboks include Wayne Denne, Simon Martin, Ian Haley, Lloyd Norris-Jones, Rhett Halkett and Jonty Robinson. Currently there are 4 players in the National team.
