Wynberg’s Concert Band – comprising brass, woodwind and percussion instruments – is under the baton of Mr Catzavelos, who is himself an accomplished trumpet player. At present, there are 40 members in the band, the leader of which – Robert de Vries – also plays flute in the Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Band and Orchestra and is in one of the South African National Youth Orchestras.

The Concert Band has a very varied repertoire which includes hymns, marches and contemporary music. The Band – combined with our Steel and Jazz Bands and Choir – was adjudged one of the top 3 schools on three occasions in the Clash of the Concertos contest at the V & A Waterfront between 2006 and 2009. Unfortunately, this competition was discontinued in 2010.

Specialist teachers are employed on a part-time basis to tutor the boys – free of charge.

2011 Highlights
• Honours award at the 2011 Eisteddfod.
• Took part in the Windworx Fanfare Festival.
