Wynberg 1st Team Cricket vs Moslem Model High School from Lahore, Pakistan - September 2008:
In 2006, Wynberg was invited to send a cricket and hockey team to Lahore where they had a totally different touring experience. They were treated like royalty and thus it was a pleasure to reciprocate the hospitality which the school received in the subcontinent. The Moslem Model High School were sent on this tour by the Pakistan Cricket Board as a result of their winning their National Schools Championship.
Because of the rain, the tourists spent the first half of their tour in Port Elizabeth where two games were hastily arranged against Muir and Woodridge. They won both matches. They then returned to the Western Cape and played Menlo Park (Pretoria) at Paarl. Menlo Park emerged as victors on the day.
Their final two games were at Wynberg where they played United Club losing by one wicket. They finished up their South African tour with a match against their old rivals Wynberg whom they had beaten in Lahore two years previously.
The Moslem Model School won the toss and scored 135 in their 50 overs on a slow pitch. Wynberg were completely at sea against their spin attack and eventually finished up 10 runs short.

WBHS 1st X1 has recently returned from Queenstown where they played in the 42nd Cape Schools Cricket Week hosted by Queens College in their 150th Year.
It was a fantastically successful week for the team who won all 4 of their matches-a rarely done feat by any team and certainly a 1st for Wynberg Boys' High School.
Day 1 saw them beat Queens by 6 wickets which was followed on Day 2 by a 10 wicket win over Grey H.S (PE)-16 year old Chad Fortune took 6/26 and scored 42 not out in this memorable win. The 3rd Day saw them beating Union H.S by 153 runs with another 16 year old, Grant Edmeades top scoring with 122 not out. On the last day they beat Dale College by 6 wickets-thus completing a very memorable week
This was a stunning performance by a team that has lost only 1 game all year-especially considering the weather in Cape Town prior to departure which saw all 7 of their arranged “Friendlies” washed out - who says “Practice makes Perfect”

Wynberg Boys' High School had an outstanding start to their rugby season by winning all their matches at the St Stithians Easter festival.
On the first day Wynberg met Pretoria Boys’ High in the main game and after some sound defence in the first 20 minutes, they managed to break the shackles running in 4 tries to Pretoria’s 2, finally running out victorious 25 – 14.
On the second day against a fired up Parktown BH side Wynberg struggled to get their game going but still managed to squeak home 15 – 9. This set it up for the final match against hosts St Stithians in front of a large partisan crowd
. Wynberg played outstanding rugby in the first half, going into the break 24 – 5 up. After the half Wynberg battled after losing key players to injury but still managed to emerge winners 27 – 18. This tour during December 2007, a first for Wynberg Waterpolo, was a huge success. The team is a young side with plenty of talent who acquitted themselves well as the results detailed below reflect:
VS Scots College in Sydney Drew 10 - 10
VS the CIS New South Wales Selection team Lost 11- 2
VS Ivanhoe Grammar Won 19 - 1
VS Melbourne High School (a game picked up while on tour) Drew 7 - 7
VS Scotch College Won 12 - 5
Wynberg: Won 3, Lost 1, Drew 2
It was a real honour for us to be hosted by and play against the Australians. They are extremely friendly and helpful but also immensely competitive. The country is similar to South Africa in some ways but being a First World country, is clearly way ahead in many areas. For example, there is no unemployment or crime. Another eye-opener was the fact that street sweepers earn enough to buy homes and live comfortably.
The country is naturally beautiful with a number of beaches and wild life parks. Sydney is a young, modern city that is vibrant and full of life. Melbourne is an older city, and as we discovered when trying to navigate our way round, is one of the biggest cities in the world in terms of square area.
The Tour was an extremely worthwhile experience; one of the highlights was meeting Les Kay (The Australian National Coach), who offered to take the boys for a session but unfortunately it did not materialise. We hope to undertake a tour of this nature in the not too distant future, but in the interim, have extended invitations to the Aussie teams to come over to South Africa and take part in our own Ian Melliar Cup.
