Schools today are about relationships and with this in mind, after much debate in 2003, we decided to divide the school into eight houses - i.e. three additional houses over and above the original five.

These names reflect the history of the school and honour men whose passion was Wynberg.

John McNaughton was the first headmaster who for twenty-three years after 1841 set the foundation for this school.

Sir Henry de Villiers, a chairman of the School Committee for many years, donator of the land on which our Junior School now stands, was responsible for persuading the education authorities to build this "new school" in 1892. It was he who sought out and appointed arguably Wynberg's most prestigious headmaster, Edward Littlewood.

Finally, Arnold Lorie, was known to generations of Old Boys. He dedicated his entire working life to this school both as a teacher and first headmaster of the Junior School. He worked tirelessly to ensure that Wynberg's name stood proudly amongst South African schools; our exceptional Music Department stands as his legacy.

These houses have now been inaugurated with one hundred boys per house. Every House Head has four tutors and their primary function is the welfare and development of the boys in their care. Boys meet their tutors on a daily basis and will remain with them for their entire school career.

The benefits of this system will only be revealed in time, but I have no doubt that we shall continue to turn out young men who are proud of their school and themselves and will, as our school mission statement says, take their place proudly in South African society.
