WBHS BANDS
Steel Band Report on the performance
at the Arts and Culture Evening 2004:
The Steel Band has definitely come a long
way. After a total of seven performances this term
alone (excluding all the times they performed on Tour)
and four more scheduled this term, it is clear that
the Steel Band is being recognized.
Our performance at the Arts and Culture Evening was
yet another success, with some people showing how
they move to ‘Shosholoza’ and others raising
their glasses to ‘Tequila’! Thank you
very much to all who supported at the Evening; it
was much appreciated by all the band members.

Report on the Concert Band
The Concert Band had a great start to the
year with many of the members forming the core of
the Guys ‘n Dolls band. In June the Concert
Band emerged victorious from a close fought contest
with SACS, Bishops, Rondebosch and several other schools,
to reclaim its title of ‘Best Wind Band’
at the Cape Town Eisteddfod – achieving a Diploma
with a score well over 90%. The Concert Band was also
part of the first ever Wynberg Culture tour
of the Boland, where they received regular
standing ovations, with audiences dancing in the aisles.
The band members all enjoyed the Tour, which allowed
them to become a much closer group.
The Concert Band recently had a combined performance
with the Campus of Schools and showcased their repertoire
at the SACS 175th year celebration and at the Arts
and Culture Evening.
The Concert Band is constantly going from strength
to strength under the guidance of Mr Peter Catzavelous
and continues to perform regularly.
Report on the Jazz Band
The leadership of the Wynberg Jazz Band was
recently taken over by Mr Alex Gibbons because of
Marc de Kock’s trip to England. Despite this,
the band adapted well and has once again grown in
many aspects, culminating in achieving an Honours
Award at the Afrikaans Eisteddfod. The band also saw
three boys chosen for the National School’s
Big Band. They are: Byron Carr – Guitar, Tsepo
Puanne – Bass and Vuyo Gugushe – Trombone.
The band was also well received on the recent culture
tour, generally setting the standard with numbers
such as Desifinado, Tuxedo Junction and In The Mood.
As said earlier, the Jazz Band has improved greatly
over the past few years and we can only hope to better
the name of school by improving our standard of music
even further.
