The Wynberg Boys’ High Steel Band took music
at Wynberg to a new level in 2005. They have shown
that with dedication and regular practice comes true
success.
The Steel Band has, this year, performed at an array
of venues in and around Cape Town, totalling 32 performances
in 2005. Whether it is a performance at a private
function or a performance at a school event, the Steel
Band is sure to leave a lasting impression wherever
they perform.
The highlight for the band in 2005 was without a doubt
their performance at Sahara Park Stadium in Newlands,
where they had the amazing opportunity of entertaining
the multitude of spectators both in the stadium and
on television. The band also received a very impressive
diploma at the Cape Town Eisteddfod this year.
The 2005 Cultural Tour to the Boland, which took place
in June, was yet another successfully planned event
that brought the music department together. Over the
duration of the tour the Steel Band performed at various
venues including the Birkenhead Brewery in Stanford,
the Oak and Vygne in Greyton and Riverside in Fraanschoek.
An enthusiastic bunch of 12 boys joined to form the
Junior Steel Band, which took off at the beginning
of 2005. The Junior Steel Band, under the leadership
of Wesley Langridge, is the new Steel Band of 2006.
One of our main goals for 2006 is to raise sufficient
funds in order to purchase more steel pans so that
we can accommodate the mass of boys who still wish
to be a part of the band.
It really has been an outstanding few years, full
of quality music and continued accomplishment. Although
we have bade farewell to the Matrics of the Steel
Band, the “Junior” Steel Band offers a
promising group of boys who are ready to overcome
any obstacles they may have to face and who are also
ready to invest a lot of their time and energy into
making the Steel Band a success. Wesley Langridge
looks forward to coaching the band and leading them
to achieving the goals they have set for 2006.
