WBHS JAZZ BAND

The jazz band, still under the skilful leadership of the pre-eminent Mr De Kock, has improved and matured tremendously throughout 2006.  Supported by an enhanced repertoire the band’s reputation of performing great music also improved.  Comprising of 17 boys from gr8 to gr12 the members are as diverse as the instruments they play.  The band, especially the saxophone and trombone sections, suffered a great loss in talent at the end of 2006 with several matrics leaving school.  Now it’s up to the juniors to use this as an opportunity to rise up and meet the expectations and standards set by their predecessors.

The jazz band can look forward to a number of events and performances during the course of this year.  This includes the traditional Wynberg Boys’ Sunset Concerts, performance at the Baxter Theatre, the annual cultural tour and a possible visit to the Grahamstown Festival to name a few.

One of the goals for the jazz band in 2007 is to have a band member play piano.  Another goal is to have complete and fully functional instrumental sections as well as achieving a Diploma in the Cape Town Eistedfodd.

Needless to say, it will be a busy and exciting year ahead and the cultural committee will continue to encourage pupils to make full use of cultural related opportunities in order to maintain a high profile of the cultural pillar.
