Vision

The vision of our department is to provide an opportunity for learners to learning, speaking and writing Xhosa as a language. We thus encourage learners to take up Xhosa as a subject as it will put them in an advantageous position in terms of jobs and language skills in the future. Learners must not only learn it but must also practice to speak the language as well, especially when confronted with situations where they can use it. Even starting a conversations with someone who speaks Xhosa serves as good practice as you one will learn more.

We also hope that there will be a time when every boy who goes through Wynberg Boys' High School would have at least done Xhosa up to Grade 9 level.

By the time a pupil reaches this level he should have learnt various skills such as greetings, and vocabulary and sayings associated with:

1. at home
2. in class
3. clothing
4. shopping
5. gardening
6. weather
7. answering phone in Xhosa
8. petrol station etc.

In the upper grades pupils will be equipped with various skills in speaking, writing and reading material in Xhosa. Vocabulary is also increased, and the ability to create more complex sentences is also learnt through grammar.

1. Department Goals
Encouraging pupils to converse more in Xhosa in order to improve their conversational skills.

Encourage pupils to write and read Xhosa material available in the library, media etc.

Promote Xhosa such that we have more boys in the upper grades.
We are also aiming at getting more A symbols for the Matric/grade 12 Xhosa class.

2. Exams and Tests
Tests for junior grades may be hand-written or typed. Tests for senior grades must be neatly typed and proof read before duplication. All exams for all grades must be typed neatly and clearly. A copy of a test/exam must be distributed to relevant staff for proof reading and checking of mistakes and errors before being photocopied.

3. Meritorious Effort (ME) Policy
Generally MEs may be given to pupils who produce an exceptionally good piece of work. However, struggling pupils who work hard and do better or improve their performance may be given MEs as well.

4. Communication with Parents
Communication with parents is of vital importance. Each teacher must try by all means to communicate with parents where deemed necessary. This is especially in case of pupils who are struggling. Communication can be in any form (telephone, letter etc).
