SUBJECTS OFFERED AT WBHS
In Grade 8 and 9, pupils at Wynberg complete a course
based on Outcomes Based Education. The curriculum
requires that the boys follow a set range of subjects.
The subjects completed in this phase of schooling
are :
English (First Language)
Afrikaans (Second Language) or an alternate Language
at Second Language level Maths Social Studies Natural
Studies Economic Management Studies Information Technology
Life Orientation Arts and Culture.
In addition, ALL pupils in Grade 9 must choose ONE
of the following two:
Afrikaans Primary Language (1st Language)
Afrikaans Additional Language (2nd Language)
All Grade 9 pupils must also choose ONE of the following
five:
Enrichment Mathematics, Remedial Mathematics, Art*;
Accounting*; French*; Music*. *Pupils wishing to take
any of these subjects up to Matric level, must pass
them in Grade 9.
If a pupil is entering Grades 10 or 11 in 2005, the
course he will take includes:

NB 1. Apart from English and a Second Language a pupil
will be required to choose 4 other subjects;
a maximum 1 per group from groups 3 - 7 above:
2. Third Languages may only continue to be taken into
the next grade if there are enough pupils to warrant
a class.
3. In addition to these examinable subjects, Sports
Science and Computer Literacy are taught in Grade
8, while Physical Education is taught in Grade 9.
At Grade 10 to 12 level, the boys follows a seperate
course which has the following subjects on offer :
A pass with Matric Endorsement entitles a boy to study
at a university on completion of his schooling. The
requirement to complete an endorsement course, including
pass requirements, is set out below
For a Matriculation Endorsement Course a pupil must
offer at least 6 subjects, subject to the following
provisos:
1. English First Language: Higher Grade.
2. Afrikaans First or Second Language or Xhosa Second
Language: Higher Grade.*
3. At least four other subjects.
4. The six subjects must include a subject from each
of four different groups.
5. At least two subjects other than the two languages
must be offered on the Higher Grade: these two subjects
must come
from two different groups.
6. Not more than four languages may be offered.
7. If Computer Studies Higher Grade or Accounting
Higher Grade is offered, then mathematics must be
passed on at least
the Standard Grade.
8. Additional Mathematics and Computer Studies (HG)
may only be taken as a 7th subject.
For a Matriculation Endorsement Certificate a pupil
must furthermore:
* pass the two approved languages (40% for a First
language, 33?% for a second language).
* pass at least five subjects (which include the two
languages) from four different groups.
* pass two subjects (other than the languages) on
the Higher Grade - these two must come from two different
groups.
* obtain at least 20% in the sixth subject.
* obtain an aggregate of 950 marks - the aggregate
is determined from the two languages and the next
four best subjects.
* In the case of a pupil who has been granted exemption
from taking a second South African language, permission
may be obtained from the Western Cape Education Department
to offer another approved first or second language.
