MATHEMATICS

SUBJECT HEAD: Ms Lindsay

Teaching Staff: Ms Lindsay, Mr Moser, Mr Sopam, Mr Crous, Mr Furstenburg, Mr Nicholson, Mr Thompson, Mr Crombie

Mathematics has long been recognised as intrinsic to the education of people who work in scientifically oriented occupations. In recent years the applications of mathematics have become more numerous, direct, complex, and essential in many jobs, as well as in everyday life. Our aim is to help pupils in developing their ability in mathematical problem solving and appreciate the importance and power of mathematics in the world around them.

UCT MATHS OLYMPIAD
Each year Wynberg Boys’ High enters the UCT Maths Olympiad, which is the biggest one of its kind in the world wherein all the participants write at one venue. Yumin Park did us proud by coming first in the Grade 12 Olympiad, which is an outstanding achievement!

Two other learners also excelled by being amongst the Gold Award winners, namely Jae-Hee Shin and Duel Rim Choi  who were 8th and 4th respectively in the Grade 11 and Grade 9 Olympiads.

The top 30 results from all competing schools are compared and this year we were ranked in the top 10 schools once again, coming 8th.
