The history department is trying to attract as many boys as possible to the subject in their senior phase and to make history as relevant and enjoyable as they can. The syllabus is being structured in such a way that learners do not fear long examinations and essay writing. The revised syllabus at Wynberg will enhance analytical thinking, researching, interpretation skills, open-mindedness as well as writing skills. History will be promoted around the school by having displays of learner's projects in exhibitions. We will also be notifying the school about days with historical significance and sharing their meanings so that we can celebrate them correctly.
The main aim of this year is to consolidate the new curriculum content for grades 8 to 10. By correctly introducing the new curricula this year a thread can be established that will integrate the subject from grade 8 through to grade 12 by making sure the work studied is relevant and of a great use to a boy in his senior history phase.
The subject teachers are currently making use of a sound database and resource centre to gather and exchange material, be it video or audio material, for the learners benefit. In this way they are making history interesting and more interactive and fun. Subject teachers will be monitoring their pupil's progress in order to make sure that they reach their goals. Those who don't achieve their goals will be attended to and helped in order to raise their marks.
The Grade 10s recently went on a History outing as a part of the Heritage Project that they are currently engaged in. The entire Grade 10 History group visited several museums in Cape Town in order to better understand and appreciate our unique South African heritage. Some of the museums visited were the Cape Castle, South African museum and the National Gallery. The boys all thoroughly enjoyed this welcome break from the normal school routine to go out and experience these great museums. Thanks must go to all the Grade 10 History teachers who helped to organise this successful trip.
