English is Life
The grade 11 AS level English class of this year are having half their classes down at our sister school, Wynberg Girls’ High School. This is of plan to give them an all round look at the English language. It will be interesting to see how this develops…
English is great! English is life!
English has been everywhere in the world, and also on the Moon!
In our modern lifestyle, we are surrounded by endless news bulletins, storybooks, factual reports, medical and technological discoveries, rumours and gossip, advertisements, cartoons, brochures, rock concerts, magazines, DVDs, propaganda, legal contracts and jokes – all written in English.
At school we try to help you to understand, to clarify, to appreciate, to respond, to protect yourself, and to know what is appropriate in terms of correctness of language, level of communication, good manners and suitable style. Yes, that is what we do!
The English department continues to achieve excellent results in the many competitions that the boys take part in.
Recently, a number of boys took part in the SACCEE English language challenge, a national English competition. Edmund Rodseth (Gr. 10) achieved the top mark in the school with 87%. James Stock (Gr. 10) also did well, achieving 83%.
A large number of boys took part in the SIAT English Exam, an international competition run by the University of New South Wales. Donavan MacHendrie (Gr. 9) and Edmund Rodseth (Gr. 10) were both placed in the 99th percentile (meaning that their results were better than 99% of the entrants). James Stock and Matthew Grüter, both in Grade 10, also did very well, being placed in the 95th and 94th percentile respectively.
